Why do Honda keep leaving F1?

With 2021 looking to be Red Bull's best shot yet at the F1 World Championship in the turbo hybrid era, thanks in part to the massive improvements to Honda's engine, it seems crazy to think that Honda are going to be leaving F1 next year.

😬 I have such a strong opinion about this topic.. I'm a huge Honda motorsports fan, I've loved them since my dad bought a used 1980s Accord, I got to drive it around in the driveway as a young boy, I remember the futuristic looking gauges, and dash.. The high revving motor.. that was my first experience with Honda, as I became a teenager I stayed interested, my dad bought a Honda prelude, it was the early 90s, and I remember how good the car handled and I began to love their technology and engineering. I remember getting a PlayStation 1, and getting the Formula 1 game, and need for speed, Gran Turismo, and I really had gotten into cars by then, and I realized just how good Honda engines were and their love for motorsports, anyways.. I watched their whole time at B.A.R. and Jordan, as they slowly got better and better, then 2008.. no more f1, no more NSX.. It sucked.. When they came back, I was so happy, McLaren screwed them with their "size zero" chassis, now they're almost better than The Mercs, I can't stand Mercedes and the SJW Hamilton, I love Red Bull, and it looks like Verstappen can get him this year, this is their best shot.. They supposedly want to leave in favor for the whole electric car "earth dreams" bullsh!t.. That isn't Honda, that's tree hugging stock holders.. And that's probably why they left in 08 too.. anyways..🥱 sorry for the huge post.. just have to say, if Honda win the championship, even the drivers trophy 🏆, they better freaking stay, if not.. it would be the dumbest move in f1 History. And it won't help their electric car sales one freaking bit 😠

Honda likes winning, not racing. They have gotten so used to dominating Moto GP that they can't handle the pressure of playing cat and mouse with a team as dominant as Mercedes. Some players like Pete Sampras enjoyed winning, not playing. Players like Federer enjoyed the sport even if he's down in the docks. It's a simple as that.

If you have ever worked in the middle or far East you will understand the concept of loss of face, its all about face, Honda had been distinctly unsuccessful and so lost face in the eyes of their rivals, fans and supporters, jumping ship is the only way to stop the rot, they have tried and can't beat Merc. Honda will go back into something they can win at. In the end the company was not gaining anything in F1.

Honda being the only constructor to leave F1 during the global financial crisis is not correct. BMW and Toyota left in 2009 which was still full blown global financial crisis. Renault did limit its F1 operation after 2010 and only supplied engines until 2016. And back in those days there were already discussions about a budget cap which was vetoed by Ferrrari and other powerhouses like McLaren; BMW-Sauber and Red Bull.

Lets not forget also, the last Honda team in 2006-2008 is now the Mercedes Team. They pulled out, Brawn continued the planned design for the original 2009 Honda and took the championship in 2009. That must've stung in Honda's board office.

Well there are a few reasons why they are leaving F1 at the end of the year , one is money , the other is for enviromental reasons , there concentrating on Electric road cars and F1 has still not decided if they will stay with the hybrid engines , go for bio-fuels or go completely electric but no form of motor sport is enviromentally friendly , mining for the rare metals and mineral that are used in the batteries to power cars damages the enviroment , just as with planting for bio-fuels will mean cutting down trees , because you will need to grow vast quantities to provide the fuel , also vast areas are required to grow food , hybrid engines are no answer either , Honda has to answer to its share holders and they are influenced by enviromentalists and the markets , it is one of the main problems of having major manufacturers in the sport , if under pressure from different groups they will leave the sport to protect there market share.

Honda literally built the best budget luxury sedan from about 2003-2016 but literally never advertised it anywhere so nobody bought it. Because nobody knows it exists. In Australia it sold as a variant on the Acclaim badge and they were lucky of they sold a hundred in any given year. Frustratingly, Honda SHOULD have the same reputation as Toyota, if not better now, for building reliable cars that refuse to die. But most people will only recognise the Honda civic, which for at least three or four years looks like it was inspired by transformers, and is absolutely alienating to most people. In short, Honda has extremely poor management when it comes to advertising and publicity. Probably the worst. Oh no, wait. Opel is the worst. When Opel decided to cease operations in Australia the media had to actually inform the public that they were trading in Australia first. Because Opel forgot to do ANY marketing.

Maybe it's a good thing. It will force British Teams to concentrate on making enginees which I cannot understand still has not been done! F1 is made only of British Teams except for Ferrari. Renault are French, yet based in the UK. Mercedes is German, based in the UK. Red bull and Mclaren use foreign enginees yet have the capability of making their own, why is there no English engines? Just makes no sense. I respect even more Ferrari know, obviously easy said then done to make an engine!

Is/are is just an American English vs. UK English thing. You know, like color vs. colour. Americans think of a company as a single entity--a thing. Therefore, companies are singular along with the verbs and adjectives that go with them. I assume the UK sees companies as a collection of people (perfectly reasonable) and therefore a company is a plurality of people associated together. FWIW, in the U.S., Honda refers to itself in the singular.

Theoretically, Honda would get affected by global events more than Luxury brands like Mercedes or Ferrari. Their consumer base is largely build off middle class families. During crises, their base would be less likely to spend on a car than a luxury brand's base, who would purchase regardless of the global situation.

Honda’s problem is that they don’t have any innovation in their cars, and hence are struggling for vehicle sales compared to their past performance. Their unreliability of new cars is also through the roof compared to their former selves, so as a manufacturer, Honda has totally lost their way. Honda lost their way in the GFC, and need to do what Mazda did in the early 2000’s to have a chance to survive into the distant future, which is to reinvent themselves with a new range so modern and innovative, yet dependable and reliable that people will actually buy the cars because of that! And I think that is why in the GFC and this year Honda have left, because they have been hit hard by their dwindling sales and lack of forward development. I hope Honda pull themselves out of this, because they are a magnificent company with an incredibly proud history, but they have lost their way, and are like a deer in the headlights with what to do for their future...

McLaren was being led in 2015 by an old grumpy Ron Dennis who wasn't able to get his design team to gel well. Getting rid of him and putting in Brown has been really good for the team. As far as Honda, it's so weird how they continually leave right as they are about to become the top engine manufacturers. They were sitting on a goldmine in 2008. Ultimately, they are a very fiscally conservative company owned by very traditional businessmen from Japan.

It should be "does". Honda is a business entity, which is a collective noun and should be treated as singular. You can think of it as "the company". "Honda is a Japanese company that is leaving F1 again. Why does the company keep leaving?" You wouldn't say "Honda are a Japanese company that is leaving F1 again. Why do the company keep leaving?". When someone from the company uses "we" it is because it wouldn't make sense for them to say "I".

@Jeroen Verzijl I got the feeling he was on testing strategies in real racing. It was the first year of Honda in torro rosso so it was all about getting it tweaked for red bulls switch to Honda the next year. Also its quite an adaption from the long game mindset in WEC in when a race is 100ish minutes. Brendon and I share a hometown so I've followed him for years. He's renowned for getting along real well with Japanese engineers and having an ability to communicate the stuff he feels in the car technically cause he knows that stuff. I reckon Honda wanted him for the engineering side and gasly for the racing side and he was probably OK with it. That's just my theory. It would been nice to see him race off the leash. I just reckon they needed to use his talents for car development cause he has a technical racing brain.

Honda (other than the death of their driver) always left for economic reasons. When the crisis hits hard, most companies downsize their production lines, let workers go, shut down factories and everything alongside that, instead of shutting down racing programs which quite frankly are less important. Honda even at times of economic crisis, had to let racing programs go, and keep their production and workers. So THAT, in my point of view, takes a LOT more balls. Don't forget that not only did the leave F1 during the last economic crisis, but they also had to stop developing cars like the NSX, the new Civic Type-R and sports-bikes. They focused on small, affordable, and super reliable cars and bikes, THAT WERE ACTUALLY NEEDED. Now with the upcoming electric cars and all the technology around them, Honda has to focus on THAT instead of winning over Mercedes. Fun Fact: Buying a Honda car today, is EXTREMELY reliable (as always), performs extremely well, and is actually made by Honda. Companies like Mercedes that can brag about an F1 championship (or many for that matter) actually use Renault engines in cars that are in fact notoriously unreliable. I don't really know what you people prefer. A company that focuses on making great products first or a company that focuses on making sure they win at-all-costs even if their actual products are mostly shitboxes. Something to consider...! :)
